Professor Tom Cotter
Professor Tom Cotter was appointed to the Chair of Biochemistry at
University College Cork in 1995 where he leads a multinational research
group working on leukaemia and related conditions. He is a board member
of The Health Research Board Ireland. He is also a former member of the
government commission on assisted human reproduction and a former Dean
of Science of NUI Maynooth.
Professor Cotter was the first recipient of both the Irish Times/RDS
Boyle Medal (1999) and the Irish Research Scientist's Association for
research (1996). He is also the recipient of the Royal Irish Academy
Medal for Biochemistry in 2002. He was elected to membership of the
Royal Irish Academy in 2005. A graduate of University College Cork
with a Ph.D. from Oxford University where he was a Pirie-Reid Scholar,
he has also held visiting professorships in both Europe and the U.S.
