Dr Aengus O'Marcaigh
Dr. Aengus O'Marcaigh is a Consultant Paediatric Haematologist at the
National Paediatric Haematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant
Centre at Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin. After
graduating with a medical degree from Trinity College Dublin, Dr.
O'Marcaigh spent six years at the Mayo Clinic in the USA where he
gained certification in General Paediatrics and Paediatric
Haematology/Oncology from the American Board of Pediatrics. He
then spent 2 years in the Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Programme
at the University of California San Francisco. While at
UCSF, he also embarked on research into the pathogenesis of secondary
acute myeloid leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes in childhood.
Dr. O'Marcaigh has published many papers on a broad range of paediatric
haematological topics. He was awarded an MD degree by Trinity
College Dublin in 1996 for post graduate work on inherited coagulation
defects, and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland
and a fellow of the American Academy of Paediatrics.
Since his return to Ireland in 1997, Dr. O'Marcaigh has maintained his
research activity into the pathogenesis and treatment of myeloid
malignancy, and is a member of the UK Children's Cancer and Leukaemia
Group acute leukaemia working party. Through this group he is has
been closely involved in the development of a new pan-European
treatment protocol for children with Down's Syndrome who develop
myeloid leukaemia.
